Great place to eat! Staff is friendly & food is great. I had the Crunchy Grouper Rueben & it was awesome!! It wasn't greasy & cooked perfectly. I don't rate too many places on yelp but had to give props on this meal. It's one of those "gotta check it out" places when in Vero Beach.

Wow! This is their Ocean Drive location. Maybe the best sandwich I've ever had--their namesake, the Red Onion sandwich. Great food, great service.

Don't let the location in the small commercial strip mall dissuade you. The sandwiches here are original and delicious. It's kind of crowded and busy all of the time, seating is limited. Translation: the food is good, and regulars keep coming back. Crunchy grouper Reuben: highly recommend. Had the cream of mushroom soup on the side.

Grouper Ruben is a must we keep coming back and someone in our party always orders it homemade chips are great the vegetarian in our group usually gets the grilled asparagus sandwich Miss the seaside location but you can sit outside at this spot too

Love this place. One of the best burgers I've had in forever. My husband wanted to go for the Grouper Rueben & he said it was the best grouper sandwich you can get in Florida.

The best sandwich I've ever had! Never before in my life have I eaten the whole sandwich crust and all (making my dogs very sad). The young lady at the counter was super sweet and helpful. I can't wait to get hungry again so I can go back, next time I'll take friends.

I came in at 11:30 on a weekday, and was one of the first people in before the lunch rush. I ordered a salad and sat there for 30 minutes waiting for it to be made. The cashiers kept walking by and not once reassured me that I hadn't been forgotten. A little customer service would have gone a long way considering the meal was barely average quality.

Had lunch there today - great sandwich - a special - grilled asparagus, parmigiana, onions and tomatoes- great combination- worth a stoop - I will go back!

The food (sandwiches and salads) are 5 star quality. The only complaint I have is the prices this place is Very expensive they need to work on having cheap daily special.

Stopped in while in Vero for the afternoon. Great food and service at a great price. I opted for the sandwich that bears the name of the place, The Red Onion. If you like the combination of salty meat with fruit, onions and toasted bread you'll loved this sandwich. The sandwich and drink filled me up for $10. Next time I'm in the east side of Vero, I'll stop by for another bite.

We were super excited to try this place- we went to the newer location on Ocean Drive and it's walking distance from our hotel that we have been coming to for over 30 years. We love the VB restaurants and are always excited to try something new. The menu looked great and had lots of good options! The restaurant is cute but from the moment we started ordering, the cashier/order taker was exceptionally rude. We were a large group (7 adults and 5 children) and we each ordered our own items (by individual family but on one check) and all had a discouraging experience to share after ordering. I ordered two meals for adults and two for children and asked for four water cups- her response? she rudely said- are you sharing meals? 1. I don't think it would matter and 2. we weren't, there are four of us and I asked for four cups and ordered four meals. I clarified that and then she counted them out loud, realized there were four and said, ,fine. I have no idea if there is a ratio of water allowed per meal or what the problem there was but it was rude. My second experience was that I asked fi the children's meal came with fries or chips, she said neither. I said, okay, I will take a bag of chips with that. she shortly responded- we don't do BAGS of chips, we only have homemade chips. I told her that was fine. I ordered another kids meal and asked for chips with that and she said, do you just want one large order? it's pretty big. I told her yes, that one order would be plenty for my kids to share. Our meals came and she delivered two big basket of chips. When I questioned her about it and pointed out that we had decided on one per her suggestion, she said, well, you might as well keep it because you paid for it. SO RUDE!!! The food was average to above average (I had the red onion sandwich and tried my husbands southwest wrap). The homemade chips were good but a bit bland. My sons loved the grilled cheese and hot dog they tried. The same staff member was exceptionally nice to us as we were leaving, i can only assume in hopes of a good tip. Overall, the food was good for the price, super bad experience with service. I would have asked to talk to a manager but it was getting very busy and I wanted to be respectful of the people waiting on food. I likely won't be going back to see if the service improves while we are here. A disappointing experience for a restaurant I was excited to try.

Anytime I am in Vero Beach for business, I try to make a point to stop here for lunch. The Grouper Rueben is the best grouper sandwich I have ever had, and I am a native Floridian who has eaten a LOT of grouper sammiches! The cream of mushroom soup is also excellent.

On Vacation we were strict in using Yelp... And attempted to be strict being vegetarian. The lunch crowd was busy and happily eating. We called ahead for take-out with a 15 timeframe and when we arrived a couple minutes early, the food was waiting for us. Two (2) Grilled Asparagus Sandwiches and two (2) vegetarian split pea soups. Amazing! One of the best vegetarian sandwiches I've ever had - perfectly prepared with a superb tangy, yet creamy lime sauce. On the side so the to-go food was not soggy. Can't wait to venture off the vegetarian menu to get the Fried Grouper Ruben (the house favorite). Keep Eating Forward!

Overpriced, and unfriendly servers.... But fantastic food!
Great food excellent grouper sandwich. I had been craving one since I got to Florida. This place was suggested went for dinner perfect time as the place is packed at lunch from what I have read. Casey was a great server and suggested that we split the sandwich which was a good idea. Casey made our dinner special. Don't hesitate go to this place it is one of a kind.

My favorite place to get a sandwich in Vero. The grilled asparagus sandwich is my favorite and their homemade potato chips are great! The fried grouper sandwich is also ridiculously good. I give it four stars though because I miss their old location by the beach that closed. Their food is a 5 though!

Had a great salad at a great price there on 7-3-14 at the early start of the book tour.. Staff was very nice and on top of it even though it was very busy. Fish was fresh and the dressing didnt overpower the salad. Small place but still had a great atmosphere.

Keep in mind it is a sandwich shop, and an expensive one at that. Very expensive for the amount of food you get. The service is good but nothing out of this world. But the food is just fantastic, really some of the best sandwiches I have ever had. The titular "Red Onion" is one of my favorites but I also really enjoyed the grouper Reuben. It is out of the way for me but I slip in from time to time when the urge fits. I love it! The food is so good and keeps me coming back so often that I have to give it 5 starts. A must try for sure.

We weren't expecting much from the look of this place though it is clean and tidy. Everyone in our group of five agreed the good was surprisingly exceptional from the perfectly seared tuna salad to the sandwiches and chicken salad my friend keeps threatening to drive two hours back up from Miami to have again. Also the waitress was very sweet and attentive.

Grouper Reuben. Amazing. Can't believe I've been eating at red onion for years and today was the first day we tried that sandwich. So delicious!! One of the worse experiences I've ever had, but before I get there I must say the only reason this place survives is because it is the only visible place to eat at off 37th and that covers a few miles. 1000's of employees from the hospital and the other 100's of health facilities on 37th eat there out of desperation of there being no place else. I saw painted on their window, hot dogs, and I was hungry so I went in. I looked at the menu to notice they wanted $3.99 for their all beef hot dog. I said to myself that I must have stumbled upon the greatest dog in town. So I asked the girl what type of dog it is and she said all beef. I said that I already understood that. I asked if they were specially made for them or what is the brand name. She had to go in the back to find out. When she emerged she said the name is Farmland. Farmland is a regular skinless consumer store bought extremely cheap dog that is not special in any way at all. But I was hungry so I decided to plop down the $3.99. I said fine, and please put some sauerkraut on it. When she came back with this pathetic looking thing she asked gr $4.66. I told her that the menu says the dog is $3.99. She said yes, but it's .50 cents extra for the sauerkraut. Steam started blowing from my ears! I said, if you are already getting $4 for the dog, how can you charge extra on top of that for toppings? Her reply was, "So I guess you don't want the sauerkraut?" While she was scraping it off the dog. I said, "NO! I don't want the dog nor anything else from you and walked out. I remembered there was a fast food grocery store a mile or so away so I went there and got a 1/4 lb dog for $1.99 with as many free toppings as I wanted including chili and melted cheese. Please stay away from these robber barons Red Onion Eatery... what a bunch of crooks!

A sweet little eatery conveniently located near the public beaches with nice outdoor seating (although it'd be nice if they had a few more tables). I went twice while visiting Vero and the first time I was delighted to have a real New England style lobster roll, on a grilled bun and with butter NOT mayo! Being from Massachusetts, this was a delightful taste of home. Second visit I had the grouper Reuben which was fantastic. Huge fresh pieces of fish in a crunchy delicious batter. Messy sandwich but great. My only problem with the place is the service. The young ladies behind the counter are blasé and disinterested in providing quick or efficient service. They act like they are doing you a favor. On my second visit, I ordered a draft while waiting for my sandwich. The young lady who took my order said she'd bring it out to me on the porch. There were only two other customers in the place. After twenty minutes of waiting, I had to go in and get her to pull my beer. She didn't even apologize for making me wait and forgetting about it. I gave the place another try, stopping in to order a sandwich to go before hitting the beach. Again, the same blasé and snooty attitude from the young people behind the counter. This time it took over 20 minutes to make my sandwich (a fairly simple turkey sandwich). When I looked at my time stamped receipt it was clear that I had waited almost 25 minutes and I said so to the server. She went back to the kitchen, returned and said "It's been 13 minutes and you're next." So... here's the thing. I worked in customer service longer than this young lady has been alive. You don't contradict the customer. You say, oh, sorry you've been waiting, I'll check on that. When the food comes out you apologize for the wait with a smile and wish the customer a good day. I will not be back to The Red Onion. If they step up the service this could be a top notch place.
